Ocean State Job Lot is opening a store in Glassboro on Aug. 31, at Collegetown Shopping Center. The space is a 40,000 square foot box previously occupied by Big Lots, which filed for Chapter 11 in September 2024. The Rhode Island based chain acquired nearly two dozen former Big Lots locations along the East Coast in the wake of that filing, and in New Jersey that included Mays Landing, Barnegat, Somers Point and Cape May, all of which have since reopened under the Ocean State Job Lot name.
The chain was founded in 1977 and sells brand-name closeout merchandise, from household goods and apparel to specialty foods and pet supplies. It reports 175 stores, 7,000 associates and annual sales above $900 million, and describes itself as the Northeast's largest privately held discount retailer. Ahead of the opening it ran walk-up job fairs at its Deptford store on Almonesson Road through the middle of August, hiring part-time store specialists and part-time temporary associates for morning and evening shifts.
For a homeowner, the useful part is not the retailer, it is the box. A large empty anchor space is what a buyer sees first when they drive a shopping center, and it raises a question about the center's direction that is hard to answer from the outside. A national tenant signing for that same space answers it: the landlord found someone who expects enough traffic on that road to justify 40,000 square feet.
That does not move a price by itself, and it would be a stretch to say it does. What it does is remove an objection. When a buyer's agent walks a client through what is nearby, a filled center reads differently from a dark one, and in Glassboro this is the second national tenant story in the corridor this year.
Our take
An empty anchor box drags on a shopping center, and a national tenant filling one means the landlord expects steady traffic again. If you own in Glassboro or nearby, a filled center is one of the first things a buyer's agent points to.
