The South Jersey Transportation Authority plans to add a third lane in each direction on the Atlantic City Expressway from Interchange 31 to its western end at Route 42, Interchange 44. The stretch runs through Washington Township in Gloucester County and Gloucester and Winslow townships in Camden County. The plan is for the whole Expressway to have three lanes each way once the work is done.

The work comes in pieces. This fall, after the summer traffic, the authority plans shoulder repairs in both directions and a wider Sicklerville Road ramp. The first stretch to be widened, from the Route 42 interchange to Interchange 41, is scheduled for 2027 to 2029. The stretch from Interchange 41 to Interchange 31 will be built one direction at a time, and neither side has dates yet.

The authority plans to keep two lanes open each way during construction. The project also includes work on two Expressway bridges, over Route 42 and over the Great Egg Harbor River. The authority cites recurring summer congestion and a high number of rear-end and side-swipe crashes as the reason for the project.
