Vineland covers about 68 square miles of Cumberland County, the most land of any city in New Jersey, and counted 60,780 residents in the 2020 Census. Route 55 runs through it. Landis Avenue, the main street downtown, is 100 feet wide and about a mile long. The Landis Theatre there, pictured above, opened in 1937 and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Schools, grade by grade
Vineland runs its own schools from pre-K through 12th grade. The city's elementary schools teach kindergarten through grade 5. Sgt. Dominick Pilla, Thomas W. Wallace Jr., Veterans Memorial and Edward Johnstone middle schools teach grades 6 to 8, and Vineland Senior High School teaches grades 9 to 12.
Parks along East Landis Avenue
Willow Oak Nature Preserve covers about 71 acres, with nature trails and a 20-acre bird observatory field. Albert V. Giampietro Memorial Park covers 52 acres, with a 10-acre lake and boat ramp, disc golf, picnic pavilions and an amphitheater. The city counts about 405 acres of parks and recreation areas in all.
Vineland's first decade
Charles K. Landis founded Vineland in 1861. In 1868, led by Portia Gage, 172 Vineland women cast symbolic votes for president in a ballot box made from blueberry crates. And in 1869, Dr. Thomas Welch, a Vineland dentist, processed the first unfermented grape juice known in the United States.
What to know
Farmland, subdivisions and a downtown all sit inside Vineland, so prices change street by street. If you are buying or selling here, you get guidance on value from sales in your own neighborhood rather than a citywide figure.
