Moorestown covers about 15 square miles of Burlington County and counted 21,355 residents in the 2020 Census. Route 38 runs through the township. Breidenhart, the house pictured above on East Main Street, was home to Samuel Leeds Allen, inventor of the Flexible Flyer sled, and later to Eldridge Johnson, founder of the Victor Talking Machine Company. It has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1977.

Public schools, grade by grade

Moorestown Township Public Schools runs kindergarten through 12th grade, plus a tuition-based, half-day preschool for ages 3 and 4. George C. Baker, Mary E. Roberts and South Valley elementary schools teach kindergarten through grade 3, and Moorestown Upper Elementary School teaches grades 4 to 6. William Allen Middle School teaches grades 7 and 8, and Moorestown High School teaches grades 9 to 12.

A lake and a sledding hill

Strawbridge Lake is named for the Strawbridge family, who gave the biggest piece of land for it. Local residents were hired to build it during the Great Depression. Stokes Hill, on East Main Street, covers about 10.5 acres; the township bought it through the state's Green Acres program to keep it open for sledding. Memorial Field covers 26 acres and hosts the township's annual Memorial Day ceremony, with a quarter-mile cinder track around one of its soccer fields.

How Moorestown got its name

Thomas Moore opened an inn near Union and West Main streets in 1743, and because of the inn, the area became known as Moorestown around 1760. Moorestown was incorporated as a township on March 11, 1922, from part of Chester Township, now Maple Shade. Parts of East and West Main Street, with about 350 historic buildings, have been on the National Register as the Moorestown Historic District since 1990.
