The U.S. Census Bureau publishes each month how many new housing units local permit offices authorized, county by county. Its August 2026 county figures show Gloucester County still well behind last year on single family homes. From January through August the county authorized 380 single family permits, against 633 over the same eight months of 2025. August by itself was 60, against 117 in August 2025.
Single family permits across South Jersey, January through August 2026: Ocean County 1,110, Burlington County 820, Cape May County 424, Gloucester County 380, Atlantic County 361, Camden County 293, Cumberland County 115 and Salem County 51.
A building permit is a local government's authorization to begin construction on a specific property. It is not a sale, it is not a finished house, and it does not guarantee that anything gets built on a set schedule. The survey counts permits rather than groundbreakings, so these figures describe what has been allowed to start, not what has started.
The county totals include Census estimates for towns that did not report that month. In Gloucester County the year-over-year drop is about the same with or without those estimates. The other counties above are this year's totals only, not compared with last year.
