Isabella Carmela Wantz and Giancarlo Cammarata, a sister and brother, are opening Gigio's Mediterranean Bistro at 72 Main Street in Mullica Hill. It is their own venture. Their father and uncles were in the restaurant business for years, and Wantz has described growing up in restaurants as being in a second home.
The building is under construction now. They are working with JRP Architects in Rivertown, and collaborating with the historical society to keep the building's original architecture in place rather than build over it. An opening is planned for fall 2027.
The menu is still being worked out. The two are looking to partner with a chef, and Wantz has said she wants the food to carry what has traveled through the Mediterranean since ancient times rather than settle in one country. Her measure of that: ask ten of their customers what their favorite fish is, and she hopes to hear ten different answers. She describes the visit as an experience rather than just dinner.
Wantz also named the places she wants to open alongside, and they are the ones people already associate with the area: Harrison House, the Amish Market, Naples and Marino's of Mullica Hill. She grew up here, and said she is looking forward to seeing familiar faces in the dining room.
Our take
Operators from a local restaurant family chose a Main Street building for their first place of their own, which says they expect the traffic. If you own in Mullica Hill and are weighing a move, that is part of what a buyer's agent points to.
